The Ruit Foundation is not just about curing untreated cataract blindness at scale in the developing world, but it is also about creating a lasting legacy of social and economic change. With the foundation’s alignment to #2030InSight mission and UN’s Sustainable Development Goal to eradicate extreme poverty, there is hope for a better future.

Ending Needless Suffering

Picture a world where blindness doesn’t define destiny – a familiar world to those living outside of the developing world. A world where a quick procedure can resurrect sight and free families from the shackles of poverty

Preventable Blindness

Cataract blindness, with 50% of the 40 million blind people suffering from it, mostly in developing countries where treatment is often inaccessible and unaffordable. Despite 80% of visual impairments are curable, many continues to live with preventable blindness-held back by social barriers and poor economic status, including unequal access to healthcare between men and female, extreme poverty, and social stigma & the exclusion faced by individuals who are blind.

Patient Story

Its cost to families, communities in the developing world

In the remote hills of Jumla, within Kanakasundari Rural Municipality, lies a small village called Birat, where 85-year-old Suikili Budha has lived her entire life. A widow and mother, Suikili’s days revolve around her modest livelihood—her tiny plot of farmland, one buffalo, and two goats. Her daughter, now married, visits occasionally to help with the seasonal cultivation. But most days, Suikili cooks, farms, and cares for herself, completely alone.
