Established in 1983, starting with only two rooms and four staffs, including Dr. S.P. Dhital as only a doctor within Government Hospital (Bhim Hospital) premises, today Lumbini Eye Institute (LEI) has evolved from a small eye clinic to one of the leading and most successful eye care center among several eye hospitals run under Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh in Nepal. It is also considered as one of the finest example of self-sustainable eye care facility in entire South Asia.

Chhanda (Kale Babu) Narayani Eye Hospital

Chhanda Kalebabu Narayani Eye Hospital was previously started as an Eye Care Centre at Krishnanagar of Kapilbastu district of Lumbini Province on 1st December 2004. The main objective of the center was to provide eye care for those who are curable blind in order to restore their sight. A door-to-door survey had been conducted by the NAB- Rehabilitation program in Kapilbastu, which had revealed that there were approximatelythirteen thousand curable blinds in the area.

Fateh-Bal Eye Hospital (FBEH) is an eye care institution managed and run by Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) which was established in 1986 A.D. Fateh-Bal Eye Hospital started its services in the mid-west region of Nepal since 1986 in collaboration with Swiss Red Cross. Later on, Lions Club MD 102 Switzerland and Liechtenstein also participated in the development of the hospital.

Surkhet Eye Hospital, managed by the Nepal Red Cross Society, has been serving Nepal’s Karnali Province since 1990. Established as a primary eye care center in 2046 B.S., it was upgraded to a surgical facility in 2009 and further enhanced in 2015 to offer comprehensive ophthalmic services. Annually, the hospital provides over 100,000 outpatient consultations and performs more than 3,000 sight-restoring surgeries, including cataract procedures. Its outreach initiatives encompass free mobile screening, surgical camps, school vision programs, and community awareness campaigns.
